Baltika Expands Malting Barley Acreage by 50% as Part of Its Own Agricultural Program
In 2026, the number of partners participating in Baltika Breweries’ agricultural program increased by 25%. Currently, 69 farms grow barley for the company.
Starting this year, the agricultural program covers 16 regions of Russia: the Voronezh, Ivanovo, Kursk, Lipetsk, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Oryol, Penza, Rostov, Ryazan, Tambov, Tula, Ulyanovsk and Yaroslavl regions, as well as Altai Krai. Within these regions, areas with chernozem soil are predominantly selected for barley cultivation, as this type of soil is widely recognized as one of the best for growing most agricultural crops.
Baltika specialists oversee the process at every stage, from developing the seed stock to harvesting and crop storage. The company involves experts from a range of fields in the program, including specialists from its soil and grain laboratories who support malting barley cultivation. Advanced equipment and technologies, including satellite monitoring, are used for soil selection and crop monitoring. This helps ensure high grain quality and the characteristics required for brewing.
“We focus not only on expanding the scale of our agricultural program, but also on its qualitative development. In particular, we are testing new barley varieties at participating farms. This will enable our company to continue meeting the needs of its breweries for affordable domestically produced malt, while also offering high-quality raw materials to other Russian breweries,”
Elena Artyukhova, Procurement Director of Baltika Breweries
Overall, Baltika’s agricultural program supports approximately 15,000 jobs, both directly in barley cultivation and in related industries.
